Synopsis

As part of a research project investigating censorship in the digital domain, this video essay focuses specifically on the visual effects of censorship in digital cartography. By categorizing, enumerating, and analyzing forms of visuality produced through the intersection of censorship, geopolitical conflict, and technological systems, the work invites reflection on the extent to which seemingly neutral media (understood as representational transmitters) are complicit in the enactment of censorship, and on their inherent condition of being censored themselves. It further raises questions about what other forms of absence may exist beyond visual visibility, embedded within cartography and, more broadly, within contemporary systems of digital representation.
