Gardens Are Always for the Future is a short documentary about Artem Filatov, a young artist and curator from Nizhny Novgorod whose practice is inseparable from the city’s history and cultural landscape. Through installations and large-scale public projects, Filatov works with place as material, revealing how contemporary art can grow directly out of local memory and everyday geography. At the centre of the film is his major long-term work, “Garden Im.”, a garden created on the grounds of the Nizhny Novgorod crematorium. Observing the artist at work and tracing the evolution of this project, the film invites the viewer to reflect on the cyclical nature of life and death, and on the paradoxes of beauty and judgement when art meets a space shaped by mourning and ritual.
